Text Box: APOKILIPTIKA 2008- FreeDOOM and DOOMocracy
Someone once wisely said about Burning Man- “If you have never been there, no explanation is possible.  If you have been there, no explanation is necessary.”
As for APOKILIPTIKA, it does require at least some explanation.
APOKILIPTIKA is an artist's collective, made up of visual, audio and performing artists from across the country and several far off nations as well.  As a Theme Camp, we made our debut in 2005, and have been growing and evolving rapidly since.  Even in our first year, we became known as one of the themey-ist theme camps in Black Rock City!  It's more than a name...It infuses everything, from our our look, our dress, our mutant vehicles, our events and our art.
As a theme, it can be described:
"Pop-agandistic Doom. Inspired from various failed socialist regimes with a heavy neo-soviet slant, we are a doomsday culture chic camp and participant ensemble, in which it is always, always, the day before the end of the world.  Totalitarianism blends with Pop-aganda, to create a fun filled forum of despotism.  "Doom" is our theater, and theater is evident. You never can tell just what might be real- or if what you see is real. The inhabitants of this camp live in a world which is a blend of SCI-FI world-end-military-industrio-sovietski fascism. Yes, over the top, permanent military-pseudo-science-cultural purgatory.”
Many people assume we are somehow scary.  If you like... but you are warned.... if you get to know us, you'll probably come to love us.  This is why APOKILIPTIKA has become the genesis of a new emerging semi-village concept- the "Terminal City Theme Camp Alliance" for 2007-- an alliance of ten theme camps aiming to dominate the 3:00 plaza Keyhole!
Thematic Principles:  See "Is That Art?"

Camp Concept:

Nearing the scene, you have the feeling that something went terribly wrong with the world; a decrepit high tech dark age.  The future?
You are greeted at once by a foreboding scene, twin guard towers flank a foreboding gateway with a machine gun facing you from one side, and an anti-aircraft missile battery on the other.  Once past the portal or sally port to be exact, a rag tag collection of tents and vehicles draped with camo netting.  A frontal “parade ground’" or courtyard  serves as general purpose plaza and dance floor.  The music of WTF 99.9 Radio APOKILIPTIKA plays on speakers (and broadcast- 99.9 FM), with appropriate tunes… flags wave inextricably above.
Visually menacing looking (yet in reality perfectly harmless) weapons are everywhere, along with dummy grenades, mines and the like.  Ammo boxes, crates, machine gun ammo belts, camo nets, and of course, what would permanent military cultural –world-end purgatory be without a bar… a “Kantina” in this case. Centered at the axis of the camp is the Kantina Apokiliptika -“Where the world ends every day!”  Drinks are on- and drink up... the world is ending any minute.
And then, there is the dreaded "Doom Dome".
  The Inhabitants:

Bedecked in surplus splendor, the members of APOKILIPTIKA sport various altered or heavily altered fatigues, pistol belts, boots, hats, helmets and other paraphernalia of post modern warrior culture gone awry.  Some are festooned in gaudy officer attire- looking a tad fascist, while others might get a bear hug from Putin himself.  Of course, the end of the world is always just around the corner at APOKILIPTIKA (hence the name), so regulation is really out the window.
Each participant obtains and recreates the uniform, gear and decorations, as he or she sees fit, and provides the personal items needed for comfort and survival (see APOKILIPTIKA Personal Gear List and source listing below).  Also-see People of APOKILIPTIKA.

Playa Transport:
Mutant vehicles...those willing and able to do so are encouraged to re-create their vehicle into various OD and camo combinations.  Tactical sedans and combat minivans would be nice asymmetrical additions.  Bicycles should definitely be converted into Tactical Beaters- with camo paint, army packs strapped-on, and various surplus appurtenances affixed.  Other alternative powered vehicles are most welcomed, militarized of course (see Department of Mutant Vehicles info at http://www.burningman.com).
